VARIOUS FACILITIES

The declaration of Parnitha National Park in 1961 was unable to arrange the issue of various facilities. They pre-existed on the mountain and their shutting down was considered impossible at the time.

These facilities are: 1) the Hellenic Air-Force camp at Karavola summit, 2) the Hellenic Navy Camp at Lagos summit, 3) radiotelevision, telecommunication facilities and the communication tower at Ornio summit, 4) antennas' facilities at Aeras summit, 5) the casino at Mavrovouni summit, 6) the Chalet "Kyklamina" at Agia Triada, 7) the camping area at Paliochori and 8) the cable-railway at Metochi.

These facilities affect both the flora and the fauna of the Park. As most of them occupy the highest summits, they have displaced plant species that grow specially on those areas and are now considered rare or extinct from the mountain. Furthermore, both the facilities and the people working in them, disturb the animals of the mountain.

Finally, the aesthetic denaturation of the scenery by the multitude of antennas and buildings, combined with debris and various junk disposal in these places, generate questions about the way a national park's core operates.

The three highest summits covered by military, radiotelevision and telecommunication facilities are shown in these photos.
